Redefining Fandom: The Impact of YouTube on Artists and Audiences

By: George Karalexis & Donna Budica

At Ten2 Media we’ve observed a significant shift in how audiences engage with music. We’re entering a new era where 85% of U.S. adults aged 14-44 identify as fans of a particular artist or genre. This evolution has transformed fans from passive listeners into active participants who are shaping the music landscape.

At the heart of this transformation is YouTube, a platform that has become the epicenter of musical fandom. It’s where people not only listen to their favorite tracks but also create fan content, remix songs, and even launch new musical trends with their own dedicated followings. The 2024 YouTube Culture & Trends Report shows that 74% of Gen Z music fans enjoy when artists and music communities engage with their interests, indicating that those who tap into these fan dynamics are finding tremendous success.

65% of Gen Z consider themselves music content creators

The report highlights that listeners have evolved from simply consuming music to creating it. Today, 65% of Gen Z consider themselves music content creators, a shift enabled by tools like YouTube Shorts, editing apps and generative AI. This surge in fan-generated content—whether it’s cover versions, mashups, or fan-made music videos—means that fans are often spending more time with these creations than with the original tracks. For instance, while the official live broadcast of The Grammy Awards might draw millions of views, fan-created videos related to the event often garner hundreds of millions if not billions more.

Artists are leading new forms of fan engagement. Take Scott Frenzel, whose song "Sugar High" shot to the top of the Shorts chart after he promised to comment on every fan-made video using his track. This led to over 750,000 fan videos in response, exemplifying how artists, by understanding emerging technologies and fan behaviors, can create a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem of engagement.

YouTube is also where music fans get the full experience. With 73% of fans turning to YouTube for content related to their favorite artists or genres—far more than any other social platform—musicians are recognizing the value of being part of this space. Music festivals, for instance, have amplified their reach by live-streaming performances on YouTube and encouraging fan participation through interactive content.

The future of music culture is being shaped by fans. Many of Gen Z’s musical influences now come from creators and online communities on YouTube, with these trends crossing over into mainstream music culture. The success of a music series like "Amazing Digital Circus," which, after six months on Glitch’s YouTube channel, amassed hundreds of millions of views, while fan content related to the show garnered over 25 billion views, is a powerful example of this phenomenon.

So, how can musicians and creators harness these insights to enhance their reach and impact?

  • Connect with your audience by tapping into existing musical worlds. Use AI-powered video campaigns or premium placements on YouTube to scale your music across audiences.

  • Increase engagement by deeply connecting with your listeners. YouTube ranks as the #1 platform for trustworthy creator content, and artists who align with this trust can capture high-attention moments, building stronger relationships with their fans.

  • Drive interest and impact. A custom study shows that YouTube delivers higher long-term engagement compared to traditional media channels. By leveraging AI-powered tools like Video action campaigns and Demand Gen, artists can reach and engage with fans at critical moments in their musical journey.

At Ten2 Media, we recognize how YouTube is transforming music culture and elevating artists. By adapting to these new dynamics, musicians can deepen their connection with their audience and play a pivotal role in the ever-changing music landscape.
